The intersection of Market and George Streets will be temporarily closed to general traffic each weekend through to the end of March, allowing work to lay the light rail tracks across the intersection.

Considerable coordination has been undertaken to get ready for the work due to the complexity of the intersection, with the road surface only 500mm from the shopping arcade below.

Due to the proximity of the arcade below, engineers have been innovative with relocating utilities by fanning them out across the intersection.

The work, which will take place over seven consecutive weekends in February and March, will include relocating the utilities, preparing the track slab and laying the tracks across the intersection.

Coordinator General Marg Prendergast said this is one of the busiest intersections along the alignment so motorists are advised to plan their journey ahead of time and use public transport where possible.

“During the closure, local access will be maintained for residents, businesses and hotel guests in the surrounding area with special event clearways in place to help manage traffic flow in,” Ms Prendergast said.

“The construction of light rail is progressing, and we’d like to thank residents, local businesses and the community for their patience during construction.”

Road users are advised of the following detours during the closure of the intersection:

  • Northbound traffic on Elizabeth St to use Hunter St- Margaret St
  • Southbound traffic on Elizabeth St will be detoured to turn right at Goulburn St
  • Southbound traffic on Castlereagh St will be detoured to turn right at Park St
