Market Street intersection work moving ahead6 March 2018
The next series of work at the Market Street intersection got underway on 23 February.
This intersection presents a particular challenge, sitting just 500mm above the pedestrian and shopping arcade below. That distance is about the height of two iPads end to end.
The intersection of Market and George Streets will be temporarily closed to general traffic most weekends until early April. This will enable utility relocation work and track installation through this busy CBD intersection.
During the closure, local access will be maintained for residents, businesses and hotel guests in the surrounding area with special event clearways in place to help manage traffic flow.
Weekend works are also continuing at the intersection of George Street with Bridge and Grosvenor Streets.
Now that the light rail track and the third rail that will power the light rail are in place, utility and finishing work is ongoing around the intersection to allow the road to be regraded to its final condition.
From 5am on Monday 19 February, a traffic switch was implemented in Zone 2, George Street between Alfred and Grosvenor Streets.
Traffic has now moved across to enable the team to complete civil, utilities and finishing works on the eastern side of the zone. This work includes the temporary closure of Dalley Street.
During February, the track team were busy in the south of the CBD. More track was installed in Zone 8, George Street between Bathurst and Liverpool Streets, and Zone 11, George Street between Hay Street and Rawson Place.
A track cross-over was also installed in Zone 8, near Bathurst Street, to provide flexibility of light rail operations in the future.
