CBD crews making progress30 August 2018
CBD zones have been a hive of activity this month as crews work to put more track in the ground and light rail stop structures begin to materialise.
Crews have now completed the track cross in zone 1, which will facilitate trams changing tracks to head back up George Street. Meanwhile, work on the Circular Quay stop is underway with the completion of cable service pits before track is installed at the stop in the next few weeks.
Zone 2 is buzzing with activity as installation of smartpole footings and the new smartpoles themselves progresses. Drainage works, installation of low voltage cables, non-potable water work, paving and kerb works, and road asphalting are all taking place on the western side. Paving work from Dalley Street to Essex Street is nearing completion. The taxi rank outside the Four Seasons Hotel re-opened this month as paving work is completed.
Track installation is moving along in zone 3 and work on the substructure of the Bridge Street stop is also underway before track is installed at the stop.
Track installation is also progressing in zone 4 and paving at the southern end is almost finished. Work is also underway on the Wynyard stop as teams prepare to install the systems cabinet, part of the cabling infrastructure that sits on the platform, in September.
Construction of the QVB stop is the focus in zone 6 with the concrete pour for the substructure now complete and ready for the steel frame, which will give pedestrians a good idea about the final shape of the stop.
Track installation is also advancing in zone 7 with tracks now in the ground down to Bathurst Street. Concrete was poured for pavement work on the western side of the zone this month.
In zones 8 and 9, pavement, road asphalt and smartpole installation on the western side is now substantially complete. A traffic switch across both zones this month made way for the installation of smartpoles, non-potable water and low voltage cable connections.
Following last month’s closure of Campbell Street in zone 10, work to reconstruct the kerb and footpath was completed. Tree pits and cable service pits were also installed. The team are now preparing for next month’s traffic switch, which will facilitate track installation on the western side of the zone.
In zone 11, crews are focussed on moving ahead with track installation. Upcoming work includes completing track work across the Ultimo Road intersection, and investigation for smartpole installation.
Excavation has started for the Rawson Place stop in zone 12. The team reached a milestone this month, with the start of track installation in the area meaning track is now in every zone in the CBD.
