The intersection of Market and George Streets will be closed to general traffic from 10pm Friday 24 November to 5am Monday 27 November to prepare for construction of light rail track.

During the closure local access will be maintained for residents, businesses and hotel guests in the surrounding area with special event clearways in place to help manage traffic flow in the area.

“This is one of the busiest intersections in the CBD with large numbers of people travelling through every day,” Coordinator General Marg Prendergast said.

“As this is a complex intersection, we need to do a lot of work to protect and relocate utilities while taking into account the QVB pedestrian tunnel arcade which runs underneath the road.

“We expect to work over several weekends at this intersection, with preparations to take place this weekend before we go back next year and work towards laying the track.”

The preparation work comes as construction on George Street between King and Park streets wraps up soon and Christmas decorations are installed.

From 25 November to 13 December, Campbell Street will be closed to general traffic between Pitt and George streets, with local access into and out of Campbell Street via Pitt Street.

“Work on intersections is essential but does have an impact on the traffic network when closures are in place, so to minimise disruption for businesses, motorists and pedestrians work is completed on the weekend when it’s quieter on the roads,” Ms Prendergast said.

“As we continue to work on major intersections in both the CBD and the South East, we are reminding motorists to plan their journey ahead of time and use public transport where possible.”
