Key intersection work completed over holiday break29 January 2017
Construction crews have been hard at work over the holiday period, completing a significant amount of work at key intersections while traffic volumes were lower.
At the intersection of Hay and George streets, vital work was completed to move sewer, gas and water mains to make way for the new light rail tracks. This will ensure that these services can be accessed in the future without disruption to the light rail network. New footings were installed for the overhead line electrification poles that will carry the wiring for both the CBD and South East Light Rail and the Inner West Light Rail, and the conduits that will service the new light rail line were installed. Inner West Light Rail services have now resumed operation.
At the intersection of George Street with Bridge and Grosvenor streets, the team worked under a network of existing utilities to install a new storm water drain, and to install new electrical conduits increasing the capacity under George Street for new cables in the future. The intersection has now re-opened to traffic although weekend work at this intersection will continue on most weekends until Easter.
By working 24/7 over the holiday period we were able to complete a large volume of work that would otherwise have taken many weekends.
Work will continue throughout the CBD in 2017. In zone 2, George Street between Grosvenor and Alfred streets, the construction compound has been extended from kerb to kerb to accelerate work in the zone and northbound traffic will not be permitted to travel on George Street between Grosvenor and Alfred streets. Access to the Four Seasons Hotel and Blue Anchor Lane will be via Alfred Street for the first stage of these works. Access to The Rocks will be via Loftus and Alfred streets, or via Harrington Street, Argyle Street, Dalgety Street, Towns Place and Hickson Road. Further work will take place in zone 3 which will see the closure of Margaret Street, between George and York Streets, for a number of weeks prior to Easter. Detours will be in place via George, Grosvenor and York streets.
Work will start in zone 1, Circular Quay east of George Street, in coming months. ALTRAC Light Rail is working closely with stakeholders in the area to discuss local access requirements and provide more information about upcoming works.
