CBD construction progress

During July, civil construction works have continued across the light rail alignment with more track laid and utilities work nearing completion.

With work progressing across the alignment, ensure you’re aware of the traffic and pedestrian conditions due to road closures, signage and traffic arrangements changing in each area.

As civil construction work advances, we will start to see systems, signalling, cabling and stop fit out work taking place in each zone. Once the systems work is complete, zones will be energised and testing and commissioning of the system and light rail vehicles will continue.

Teams in zone 1 are progressing work on the Circular Quay light rail stop with excavation now complete, making way for work to build the platform and lay the tracks. Upcoming work will include concrete pouring for the track at the platforms ahead of construction starting on the platforms themselves. 

Track installation is complete in zone 2, including across the Bridge and Grosvenor Street intersection as well as the connection to zone 1. Works are nearing completion in zone 2, with smartpole footings and installation, drainage, low voltage infrastructure, non-potable water, paving, kerb and asphalting works all underway. July also saw finishing works at the Four Seasons Hotel driveway exit finalised. Excavation has also been completed to prepare the Bridge Street stop for the lean mix, or base layer of concrete, to be poured.

In zone 3, a kerb to kerb closure has been implemented, with traffic no longer able to travel through this section of George Street. While, in a recent milestone for the CBD, Hunter Street has permanently switched to two-way between George and Pitt Streets after more than 30 years as a one-way traffic strip.

More than half the track has been installed in zone 4 as paving gets underway at the southern end. Work on the Wynyard stop is moving ahead with reinforcement steel and conduits installed as excavation for the stop nears completion.

Work on the QVB stop in zone 6 continues to progress. Stormwater pipe works on the eastern side have been laid, and excavations for platforms on the eastern and western sides are substantially finished. This is ahead of slab concrete pours for platforms and paving works starting on the eastern side.

The western side of zone 7 has been excavated in preparation for services installation, smartpole footings, platform and pavement construction, and lean mix pour at the northern end. These works will facilitate track and paving installation.

Zones 8 and 9 have had substantial work on the western side pavement, asphalt and finishing works completed. A traffic switch from the western to eastern side of George Street will allow substantial finishing works to be completed and new overhead cable poles to be installed.

The Campbell Street closure in zone 10 made way for the installation of new smartpoles, kerb works and tree pits.

Work on the Haymarket substation in zone 11 has progressed with services works now underway. Track installation work also continues in this zone.
