Buses to replace Inner West Light Rail between Central and The Star

14 December 2016

CBD Coordinator General Marg Prendergast today advised Inner West Light Rail customers to be aware of upcoming service changes as buses temporarily replace light rail between Central and The Star from Boxing Day.

Ms Prendergast said the closure of the Inner West Light Rail line between Central and Convention will take place from 26 December 2016 to 23 January 2017 to accommodate essential intersection work at Hay and George streets.

“We know a lot of people are travelling from Central Station and the Inner West to Pyrmont for work so we are taking advantage of the quieter summer period to undertake utility work in preparation to build the new intersection where the CBD and South East Light Rail will cross the Inner West Light Rail,” Ms Prendergast said.

“A select-stops replacement bus service will service Central, Paddy's Market, Convention and The Star light rail stops. While we will have customer assistance on the ground, we encourage customers to check signs and stops, and allow extra travel time.

“Conducting this work during the holiday period is vital to ensure we aren’t putting too much strain on the network and are minimising the impact to thousands of customers who use the light rail each day.

“We urge all transport and road users and pedestrians to be aware of the changes, to allow extra travel time and to plan their journey ahead.

“We are also pleased we are able to support the Haymarket community by ensuring the light rail is back up and running in time for Chinese New Year and have partnered with the Haymarket Chamber of Commerce and City of Sydney for a Chinese New Year lantern installation in Dixon Street.”

Between Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve, George Street between Ultimo Road and Campbell Street will be closed to general traffic and Sussex Street at Hay Street will also be closed for southbound traffic. Local access from Sussex Street into Hay Street will be permitted.

Customers should plan their journey ahead at Transport Info.
